Yes Service Recovery is a great tool, when it is applied in the right way and appropriately, hence I mentioned as one possibility as to why the OP may have received thing meal.
However I hope no other FIRST customer was deprived of it if he/she fancied it at a later stage of the flight, which I would have been quite annoyed with, if I was in First.
Golden rule in First: NEVER EVER give anything away until the end of the flight, as a Customer may wish to have it as part of "Eat what you want when you want (subject to availability, which does not include Customers in any other Cabin)
