No indeed, AFAIK, CE is simple front to back although occasionally, indeed, I have had outstanding crew asking me if I had a specific preference for the meal before starting the service and "reserving" me one which I duly appreciated (and praised through the online feedback form).
I remember when LGW-FAO was a GB franchise and there was one purser, Eduardo I think he was called, who would go around the cabin with a pen and paper taking everyone's order for dinner. A round of drinks followed, then the whole meal service was done by hand from the galley - not a trolley in sight. A separate starter, cheese plate, port, champagne from full size bottles - those were the days!
