review from 2013
Funny you should ask. I stayed and wrote this review about the westin chennai velachery a year ago, but never got around to posting it. Things may have changed in the interim--I know, for example, that they have a new executive chef:
Lovely lobby, perfectly nice rooms, staff is eager and pleasant but not all that skilled. It's a very pretty property.
As a plat, didn't get an upgrade at check-in--all suites were occupied when we arrived late at night--but were offered one the following day. There's one suite per floor, and they all back to the elevator. Since mr kk is a light sleeper, we passed on the upgrade and stayed with our perfectly nice room at the end of the hall. (Side note: if you're building a hotel, why would you have the suite share a wall with an elevator?)
Breakfast is available in either the lounge or the main restaurant, with significantly more options downstairs. Breakfast was great, many western and Indian dishes...although the options didn't change much day to day, there was a lot to choose from. Egg station, waffle station, hot options, cold options, cereals, fruit, cheeses, breads/pastries, fresh juice/smoothie station, etc. The masala chai was terrific.
I got the impression every room currently comes with breakfast, although this will likely change over time. The hotel didn't seem that busy.
Lobby and breakfast restaurant really lovely, open space and many design elements. Very attractive space.
High speed Internet worked very well and was free for us as platinum guests. I had prepared myself for issues in India, but this was a nice introduction.
Drinks and snacks offered nightly in the lounge....three hot options, three cold options and three sweet things, plus some whole fruit. Drinks made to order, staff pleasant and friendly. You might be able to make a dinner out of it if you don't feel like venturing out.
The hotel gym is perfectly fine with a view of the pool and several treadmills/ellipticals, plus free weights. The pool is great if you want to swim laps.
There were a number of service failures, though, which I suspect/hope will be remedied as the hotel is open longer. The 'do not disturb' sign on the door was ignored, multiple times. There's also a 'do not disturb' button next to the bed, but the hotel provided a door hanger and staff should be instructed to honor it. There was an issue with the room never getting cleaned on the day where we had planned to move to the suite. Staff was very apologetic, and the problem wasn't repeated.
One restaurant recommended by several staff members had been closed for months...guess no one call the number they gave us to check. We were given the address and (wrong) phone number and walked to the restaurant one evening to discover it closed.
The following night we had the concierge get the correct address and phone of the restaurant, and one of the hotel staff explained to a rickshaw driver where we wanted to go--we had the correct info written down. Hotel guy told the rickshaw driver the old address, and after driving past where we'd walked the night before, and stopping several times to ask directions, the driver finally called the now-correct number and refused to take us to the new location as it was too far away. He didn't speak English, we don't speak Tamil...but he did get us back to the hotel and we paid him the agreed upon rate--wasn't his fault.
After we'd been back in the lounge for about 20 minutes, clearly unhappy, one of the guest relations girls came up and offered to get us a hotel car--at hotel's expense--to take us to the correct location, but by that time we'd eaten lounge food already and were in no mood to try a third time.
Part of this is just India, but I did expect a bit more out of the information we got from the hotel. We got a recommendation for two car services, both of which didn't show up at all at least once (and were late every time they did actually show). If that's SOP, would have been helpful to know.
That said, I celebrated a milestone birthday at the hotel and they made a big fuss over me, providing us with a terrific bespoke 'street food' meal (we paid for it, but prepared just for us, and really amazing) and a lovely (gratis) selection of Indian sweets delivered to the room instead of a tradional cake. Great fun, and very thoughtful. ^
Back to 2014, I'd definitely stay again if I was in the area, and would be curious to hear how the hotel is doing now!
