I can't imagine Marty getting up before the crack of dawn to spend >3 hours in OOL, but on your link I also saw a JQ flight at 08:50 arr. 09:10, which is probably hot by a measly ~10 minutes & costs A$88, so I think he'll take his chances with having 100 minutes in OOL & an all-JQ itin. But I'm surprised JQ won't thru-tag his bag!

against taking the 8:50 flight. JQ will NOT re-accommodate Marty and will forfeit his fare if he arrives late at the check in at OOL even if the incoming is a delayed JQ flight. Better take the 7AM flight then spending a fortune finding him a last minute fare (which would most likely involve flying back to SYD for the evening QF flight).
