I don't know what the F means after the card number. I've seen C or IC for EMV transactions, S for swipe, M for manual, but I've never seen F.

Also, was this incorrect behavior from the POS terminal? Should it have asked me to insert my card?
F is for Fallback. I've seen that when the chip couldn't be read and the card has had to be swiped here in the UK. This is also means they are covered for the liability shift as an issuer is liable if it approves a fallback transaction (A special flag is sent with the transaction).
