The only downside to GE that I know of is if you're in some hurry to get PreCheck back. It takes a few months to get an appointment for GE.
Back in Feb it took a few days for me to get an appointment. I guess it depends on what airport you want to go to. Even if I had to wait months it would still be worth it.
