Had they been all on the same booking as two pax + child I think 99% of the time someone else would have been bumped, irrespective of their last names, especially as it sounded like a very small overbooking.
Of course it was fine for BA not to board someone who was alone on a PNR or both of two people together on the same PNR, etc. However, IMO it would have been wrong to offload someone else if it had been the case that the wife on a separate PNR was using the same last name. Evidence of marriage should not give special privileges for people who opted for separate PNRs. The last name that someone chooses to use should have absolutely nothing to do with IDBs, it's all in how the PNR(s) have been set up.
