Personally if I was travelling with a young child I would OLCI asap to get seats together especially on a busy holiday flight after a music festival. But then again, see my previous post.
This almost sounds like you're blaming the people because the wife decided not to take her husband's last name. Or perhaps the couple isn't married so there would be no expectation of the same family name.
