Probably the 767 scheduled had gone out of service, and a 747 was the only aircraft available with enough seats on it to operate the route. BA doesn't have too many 767s left and would need two A320s (with crew) to supply enough seats for all the passengers. The choice is then---offload/delay a bunch of passengers and pay their expenses, cancel the flight and rebook everyone (and pay their expenses), or use a 747 at an economic loss.
