I would forget the rental car and hire drivers/go on tours. The roads suck and have detours (without detour signs) frequently. We did not stay in Los Suenos either time in CR so can't say specifically for it.

Manuel Antonio is awesome. We did tours with this guy below a few years ago. He was great. We did Manuel Antonio with him and also another tour of some wet lands type area off the ocean. Both incredible with him as the guide, explaining the vegetation, spotting animals, etc....
