Not quite, with the refurbished config and even with the previous one (where front rows of ET had the same legroom as CE), it's really the passenger ratio between ET and CE is basically 1.5/1.

What I was trying to say to Wythy in reply to his comment "Besides, the bag issues are on the whole not caused by your average economy passenger but by your average Premium passenger." was that it's not really your average premium passenger that causes the problem, since their cabin baggage rarely spill outside their own cabin (based on the assumption of 'premium passengers' being CE passengers).

In fact, with an empty seat between the seats to put their smaller cabin bag, a compliant CE passenger should have less of a problem with hand luggage than a ET passenger, even if they do not put the bag under the seat in front of them - they can always put it under B or E seat, as long as it's not filled up (it shouldn't be).

I am pretty sure there is enough overhead locker space in CE to put a larger cabin bag up there for each CE passenger, as there are only (maximum of) 2 passenger per side, provided people only put the larger bags there AND they did not bring in excessive amount or size of bags. The same does not apply to ET - I do not think there is enough overhead locker space to put all the larger bags there if every ET passenger brought one on board.

However, CE passengers often have big paper bags full of shopping and/or carrying oversize wheelie bags that are both very space-inefficient though, so I think the bag size compliance level is quite poor among CE passengers. Still, I have not seen a CE bag spilling into ET yet, except for when a CE passenger turned up after the CE lockers were already filled by ET bags.

Non-compliance in CE with the bag quantity when it comes to small bags wouldn't be too bad in terms of their impact - you can always make them put them under the seat in front of them and under the empty seat in the middle. However, big bags do cause problems and some seem to fail to recognise that the aircraft is a shared space and wish to hog the entire section of the overhead locker by him/herself.

Beyond the CE, I think Wythy has a very valid point if he included "status" passengers in "premium" passengers. I have to say I see a lot of people with "status" tags with excessive amount/size of baggage, and of course, many are in ET where there is less space than in CE. It's a bit of a shame really - those who should know better are some of the worst offenders.

I sympathise with people for not wanting to wait for the bag (or fear delayed bag). I also sympathise with those who need to carry things on board as they are confidential or essential and cannot risk their being out of reach.

I just hope that BA will be installing the big overhead lockers in their newly ordered aircraft! Those big lockers that allows the bags to be stowed side down provides an enormous amount of extra space without impacting on the headroom too much.
