For OP, he can send in a webform. Under the COC there is no compensation for this. But, DL may choose to make a customer service gesture.
The real problem here is balance between time of UG and departure time. In theory, the GA should have held OP until T-14. When an empty seat remained after the cutoff, OP would get it. But, GA's do jump the gun a bit because it makes closing the flight and an ontime push more doable.
I'm pretty sure even a DM on full F can't "by the book" change to a flight that is F0, which is what the flight should show when the GA processes the upgrade into the last seat. I'm sure there are ways to override this.
I agree that no compensation is due under the COC, but I still think posting an upgrade on GIDS (and that the customer would presumably see in the app) and then rescinding it is tacky at best. Of course, there are times such as the situation
Gralistar mentioned earlier when this is the right business decision, but I don't like the idea of trying to brush it under the rug. Own up to it. An apology and a couple HOOUs from the GA would go a long way here and cost DL very little.
