It is a valid point but not applicable in my case.
My guesstimate is that only 5% or fewer of my flights in the last 10 years involved Sydney as a destination, departure point or connecting point. Yet, I'd say 99% of damage to my checked bags or the contents thereof occurred on a flight that involved SYD.
Therefore, it certainly has nothing to do with a frequency of use in my case. By far the highest % of my flights involve LHR and I do not recall ever suffering damage on a flight involving LHR unless it also involved SYD. In case anyone is wondering, I have suffered no damage that I can recall that involved connecting points between LHR and SYD unless SYD was also involved.
In addition, I have used more non-SYD Australian airports than SYD and unless SYD is involved, I don't suffer baggage damage so I'd say it's not an "Australia-thing" either.
It is certainly very strange that I rarely (much less than 1% of my flights) suffer any kind of baggage (external or contents) unless SYD is involved one way or another.
