By knowledge of alternative routings, I include knowledge of available inventory on likely alternatives routings on my travel day. For example, I was scheduled EWR-PHX and UA agent - and his supervisor - couldn't find any seats after my aircraft went MX. I suggested EWR-MSP-PHX on UA/US interline connection, not a typical routing, knowing plenty of seats had been available before I left for the airport. I flew with empty seats next to me on both segments.
