So called today after check in LAX-JFK, first PM agent said, nope, no upgrade. The second looked up the rules and added me to the standby list, which now only says "your name won't appear on the standby list until activated by the gate agent."

Check the list on Delta.com and go to view full (if you're given the option) and see if your name is there. If it is, you're all set. If Delta.com says something about "you must be activated" and/or you don't have an option to view full, then you're still not 100% of the way there, and should play phone agent roulette again. If you have any time before your flight that is during weekday Central Time business hours (when the most senior and experienced agents will be on shift in Chisholm), that may be your best bet.
Also, not sure how long before your flight, but your best chances may be to call within 6 hours of departure.
