Transited through SYD dom-int in last July, as the QF bus was taking us through the maze (close to the maintenance hangars on the dom side) we saw a tagged piece of luggage on the ground, seemed it had fallen off from a container. I didn't take a snap but recall the tags had LAX and SYD so def transferred either way. Felt bad for the poor passenger and all the trouble that would ensue. The shuttle driver didn't bother to radio any one. Thought that was strange as this was also a security risk.

As to the question, bubble wrapping the fragile items would be my advice.
