if your route is BA JFK - LHR - AMS, it's a 90+% likelihood that they will NOT let you check the bag 'short' to LHR. that's the feedback on here. I had it happen a few years ago and paid $400 for the priviledge.
Checking-in in some outstation that doesnt come across these that often (and indeed with an AA agent) might help your chances of being able to short-check the bag to LHR though I think AA is also generally pretty hot on this.
Checking in at LAS
BA want £300 for me to change the ticket to a different day so have 2 options if AA are adamant that it must be checked to AMS
1. Take the flight then book another ticket back
2. Miss the LHR-AMS flight then face the hassle of getting my bag back at LHR
