I'll agree that the US trail makes sense over the AA challenge, both because you can aim for a higher level and because the status is immediate.

But are you sure about this?

What is your home airport? US doesn't fly from DTW-BOS. You may be changing in PHL, or maybe somewhere less convenient, but not DTW.
