As mia has explained above, there are exceptions to every "rule". I have had the BC Preferred for 3 + years and never had a problem getting cash back for gift card purchases. Of course, if all you use it is for gift card purchases, then this may come to AMEX attention. I use my card 90% for regular purchases and 10% for gift cards.
