I grew up here, and I do find that insulting.

I don't like downtown very much at all either, but to call it generally "crappy" is unspecific and lacking nuance. Is there a large transient population? Yes. Could the streets and sidewalks use a little more cleaning? Sure can. On the other hand, does it have redeeming aspects with character and utility? Yes.

As all good travelers know, it's often best to specify our likes/dislikes as opposed to just insulting someone else's home.
