As an update , they paid the 1k fare difference of new carrier but refused to pay the compensation on the basis that it was unforeseen maintenence issue. They have been taken to EU court a few times and there are some rulings on this, but still grey areas. Ive got back to pay 3 times the amount for united PBI to LHR via EWR
