Yes, the qualification period is Jan 1 - Dec 31 for everyone. I do believe that it's check-in date that counts for nights and check-out date for stays.
However, your benefits run through Feb the year after you make status. If you are able to plan heavy travel the first two months of the year, you can keep your status and travel every other year.
If im not mistaken, i think it's the check-in date that will count for the stay credit. So for stays with a check-in date prior or on dec 31st, will be credited on the current year.
Night credits will depend on the specific night. So for stays that had a check-in date of dec 31st and check-out date of jan 2nd, 1 night credit (dec 31st) will go to the current year, and the 2nd night credit (jan 1st) will go to the following year.
