7K PP worth? I'd do it. Here are the reasons why I feel it's superior to Platinum, having had both for spans of a few years each. Note, the "value" depends heavily on your flying patterns. I tend to fly 99% internationally on NH, mostly via NRT and HND, so my thoughts will be in that context.
- Suite lounge access. Undoubtedly a far better product than the biz lounges. I honestly look forward to going. Recent expansions in the menus and service offerings are a welcome change, and further make this a nice perk.
- Upgrade confirmations. I am at 100% for upgrades clearing from C to F and Y to C in the past several years as an AMC member. I will say that I had great success as a Plat too, but as a Diamond, they tend to clear earlier and agents are willing to "push" them through as they call it.
- Diamonds receive a gift set which, and don't quote me on this, but included most recently a few hundred US dollars worth of gift certificates as one option, for duty free shopping on ANA. While they have lowered this benefit in recent years at least once, it's a nice touch and is cash back in your hand in some sense.
- Zero to no wait times for customer service. This can actually be huge in some circumstances here in the US where the call center is presumably smaller and wait times can be 45min or more on the normal line.
- Other benefits such as increased upgrade points, increased RDM accrual and priority boarding.
Overall I would say that no one benefit is near worth enough, but the combination of them plus the achievement of it makes it worth it in my mind, especially if one is close to achieving the required # of PP. For me, your situation would be a no brainer.
