Brian, I suspect we disagree less than you might think. The tenth amendment is pretty much useless these days, IMHO, because alomst everything we do in modern society crosses state lines or depends upon something that crosses state lines and therefore can become the federal government's business as interstate commerce.
The states have also become addicted to Federal money and can be coerced into rolling over for Congress quite easily - hence our uniform drinking ages and our late 55 mph national speed limit.
I doubt this is what the Framers had in mind, though. They just couldn't see what life would be like in 225 years.
