My husband rides bikes regularly, and planned to do this. They use bikes made in California for beach riding. He decided not to do so as our driver really made the bike riding sound difficult. He spoke of professional bikers having poor success at keeping their bikes upright when going down the dunes. Do your own evaluation.
We did this with no problems unless you are under 5ft 6. I am just that and they had only 1 bike that was small enough for me (which became a problem when it got a puncture). The ride was pretty easy (I skipped the steep downhills that my husband did) and gears allowed riding uphill to be fine. Wasn't too hot at 5:30 in September for us.
