This might not be the case on US routes, but on a recently-booked European ticket, using Aeroplan would have resulted in almost $500 per ticket in "fuel surcharges". It was $1,250 and 120,000 Aeroplan miles to book two tickets, or I could have booked (and did book) cash tickets at about $2,090 all in. It hardly seemed worthwhile to use 120,000 Aeroplan miles to only save $800.
