I don't know about the US, but I know in Europe some of the big rental car agencies don't rent to people over certain ages.
The problem is that age isn't the issue, it's fitness to travel. So age, while "objective" will bar people who are completely fit to travel.
The other issue I have is people who are unable to get around on their own being assigned an aisle seat. While I haven't had this happen to me, I wouldn't feel very safe having someone sitting in the aisle seat who would be blocking me in in the event of an emergency.
