You can do the stopover on either the outbound or the return direction.

Try CDG as the stopover with MAD and FRA as the ends of the open jaw since USA-CDG-MAD and USA-CDG-FRA (and vv) are valid routings, although I've done USA-FRA-CDG without any apparent problems, IIRC using the DTW-FRA nonstop.
