The routing should be OK. I have a award routing SNA-ORD-NRT-SIN. Figure out exactly what flights you want (that are available for award) and call it in if it doesn't work online. Don't talk about a "free next-day connection", what you are asking for is an specific itinerary from NRT to LAX.
