Welcome to the club indeed.

Being Dubai based, I share the same frustrations. The other day I saw someone with a India-USA fare that half of a Dubai-USA fare.

LAD-DXB-Europe is a bit of a detour, so the prices will be very attractive: from EK's perspective the marginal cost to of adding a passenger to a flight is pretty low, so why not steal that pax from doing a LAD-Europe direct if they want take the detour, even adding a free stopover. Consider it a bonus that you have a reason to stop in Dubai.
