AC was already in the market and flying 767 and L1011's several times a day. Alaska was flying MD80's with no inflight entertainment. The meals in FC were pretty extraordinary, and the coach meals were good but they were no match for the Widebody flights with inflight movies and free food as well - plus Alaska had virtually no brand recognition in Eastern U.S. or Canada and wasn't as well known in Los Angeles as they are today. It was a losing battle right out of the gate unfortunately.
Sounds like it was epic for sure...
