What's the difference if my bags are stolen because United fly them in early or I was slow picking them up?
Not much, unless you can prove they sent the bags on an earlier plane AND you were at baggage claim before the bags came out, thus leaving them somewhat open to liability for "leaving your bags around without you there WITHOUT your consent."
I'm sure there's a lawsuit in there somewhere for when airlines do that.....
