Here's the deal. If the plane is not full, Delta will not put someone in the middle without charging for the seat(EC add-on fee). In this case the odds are good that it will go out empty. If the plane is full/overbooked - Delta will stick anyone in that seat without charge.

My SO and I rolled the dice just as you are doing for the same reason (she prefers window, I aisle). One leg there was no one in the middle, the other leg the plane was full and they stuck returning cruise ship passengers in the middle at no extra charge.
