I was at the T1 UK & Ireland lounge a few weeks ago. I handed over my BP and stood behind the agent's podium whilst my son came through (Gold). I did notice on the right hand side of the screen in bold capitals "
GOLD GUEST LIST MEMBER PLEASE ACKNOWLEDGE" or very similar so I suspect your second option is the likely reason for the agent's confusion.
