This was discussed in the AA forum as well. I would link to that but that forum seems to be down. I think the reporter of this article took a few liberties by saying "AMERICA'S biggest airline is sending a New Year's plea to staff as it battles to stay in business: don't get ill and please don't take phonysick days.

From what I recall, the message was aimed more at people who abuse sick leave not absences for legitimately being sick.
