Outside of wait staff I rarely tip at a hotel. I put the DND sign on the door as I do not need maid service for a three day stay. More recently we had a guy haul some gear up to our room. While not needed - it was nice after a loooong day of traveling. At the time I did not have any small bills. Was rather embarrassed and just thanked him. The next day I saw him and gave him a few bills and apologized. He seemed to appreciate that.

IMHO Tipping is out of control and Marriott's latest move was the finial straw for me - I no longer stay at their properties.
