This isn't just a BA problem, it's a more general problem.
I've never seen an airline that will cancel your connecting flight booking when your inbound flight is 5 mins late.
Never. It's absolute madness.
Conversely, I've had a scheduled 40 min connection at MUC on LH which ended up being 20mins and I still made it.
