Yea, the BA fuel surcharges are a total ripoff. Myself, and most others here, never use BA for long haul awards. You can go to Orbitz and just buy a one-way SFO-MUC for $600.
You can hold an award for 5 days. If you see something better, you can call to change, or let you hold expire and rebook, etc.
And gold status will get you all the usual oneworld Ruby perks, but you can't use 500-mi upgrades on awards or transatlantic flights, amongst others.
