I flew Norwegian this summer, no seat res. At the check-in counter they asked me if the seat they assigned was OK for the two of us (emergency exit at bulkhead, whole row to ourselves) which we were fine with.

Plane was around half empty (OAK-OSL) so that accounted for some of our luck. It seems we got even better seats than those that paid to reserve.
