The tropical cockroaches are apparently pretty common, especially in rental SUVs and 4WDs, in Hawaii. The innkeeper where I always stay has said her truck gets infested a few times a year. In dozens of trips to Hawaii, I've never had them in a car.

I wasn't irate about it, like the story said, just a little frustrated at first because we couldn't exchange the vehicle and we kept feeling like we were being bit all the time. We eventually just bought a can of bug spray and dealt with it ourselves ... probably the route we should have taken when we first spotted them. The rental agencies are used to dealing with reimbursements for this if you keep your receipt.
