So you got one person's view on how they interpret the T&C's. I'd suggest taking a different path and contact someone else and see what the answer is then. This does sound like a reasonable exception that should be (and has been) granted once explained. Maybe one of the Lurker's would offer their opinion if contacted.
I had an issue with AA where the auditor would not budge, the EXP agent attempted to reverse the "correcting" transaction and it was reapplied, so she did a "courtesy" transaction and it stuck. End result was all that counted.
Did you see my comment about the audit I just had above? If they are deducting stays from my account as part of the audit for overlappying 1 night stays this is clearly the policy. And it's not like you can just call them to discuss, there is no phone number and you only correspond with the auditor thru email.
