I do this all the time - bizarrely, crew are sometimes surprised when I ask!? I generally drink wine (or champagne if in a foggy moment I forget it's been enhanced), so I don't tend to ask or indeed get offered a double during the initial drinks round. But that doesn't stop me asking for/getting more later in the flight!
