I was basically taught to only tip when checking out (although I think may need to change that), but for an overnight stay I don't think I've ever given less than $5, but often do $10 if it's a few days and I go in and out a few times.
I tip on each in and each out, because I don't think they pool tips by the week. Maybe valet tips are pooled by the shift, but the only way I feel comfortable that the right person is getting the tip is if I hand cash to the person moving my car. If my car goes in and out a couple times during a one night stay, that's $12 total.
