It's clearly done because of the preferred pods on the later flight and people are willing to pay it. If the 763 proves to have a higher paying J demand over the 777HD I am sure they will charge more for it.
I'm not so sure it is clearly done because of demand for pods. For example, a 788 will be operating YVR-YYZ-YVR all winter and it is selling at the same price in business as the A319/320/321 flights. Same price as the 767 flight. Oddly the 777s (including HD) in P/Z is more expensive than either the 787 or 767.
I think AC is pricing based on busier times of day and trying to discourage bookings YYZ-YVR on AC33 to leave space open for YYZ-YVR-SYD through pax.
AC's inability to sell pods at a premium on its routes is shocking. Even the 77L/763 YYZ-LAX service is often the cheapest Z/P product on the route vs. AC's other narrowbody YYZ-LAX flights.
If people aren't choosing pods over Airbii J, I find it a little hard to believe they will have an issue with AC's new fleet-wide longhaul HD Y configs.
