exactly !!! i cover 20+ countries per year as part of my business territory, and i carry 3 CC + 2 ATM cards because they each have, and will, fail in different instances.
AMEX,VS/MC,CHIP,PLUS,CIRRUS,MAESTRO, etc... carry a variety if you want to be covered.

I may suggest to have cards from different issuers too. I used to have only two cards, a Visa and MC for the same issuing bank, and 3~4 days prior an overseas trip, both cards were cancelled due to "safety reasons". I called them, the agent told me he couldn't revert the cancelling, but I didn't have to worry, in one week I''l receive the new cards...
