Welcome to posting on FT!

Y fares are immediately upgradable at booking provided there is space in the RU. To replicate in the future buy a full Y fare and you will either be upgraded at time of booking or if that is not available will be at the top of the gate upgrade list when you arrive at the airport.

When booking the flight you will see an "Upgrade Available" indication on the flight selection page for flights that have space in RU. Buying a Y fare on those flights will get you an upgrade right away.
