Not the end of the world mind you, but the policies are a bit convoluted for an experienced AA/OW flyer, can't imagine what it's like for a first timer.

I presume HKG-TAO was on CX or KA.

Well with this notice, they could not be clearer: (American Airlines Travel Agency Reference)
American will continue to 'through-check' bags when the separate ticket is for travel on:

American Airlines and American Eagle
US Airways and US Express
oneworld partner airline
