Tried to use some air points to pay part of a ticket. Internet said I did not have enough air points. From research it seems that one needs enough air points to pay for the entire balance of the ticket ,excluding taxes. Am I correct on this.

If so that means one needs a lot of air points for a ticket from AKL to LAX in business.

Appreciate any clarification on this.
