I like hard shell for big suitcases that come with me on long haul. A good basic Samsonite doesn't attract attention and lasts forever. For short haul I have a soft Tumi. It only rarely gets checked in.

I've never understood the shrink-wrapping of suitcases. It looks naff and is environmentally unfriendly. It also doesn't stop anyone from stealing something if they really want to.
