The question is legit. I have not been paying anything extra for similar situations on AA, but those tickets also included transatlantic sectors. I did not have days but several months between the local leg and the international one.

Would the airline hold the baggage in the meanwhile? Unlikely. So why pay twice if they force you to check it twice? ;-)
